CUPS Community Health Centre
announces
HARLEY
SHUSTER
As the 2007 recipient of
the
Giving Wings to the
Dream
Award
Carlene Donnelly, Executive
Director and Michael Lang, Chairman of the Board of Directors
at CUPS Community Health Centre and pleased to announce that
Harley Shuster is the 2007 recipient of the Giving Wings to
the Dream Award.
The Giving Wings to the Dream Award is given
in recognition of long- and outstanding service to CUPS Community
Health Centre. Recipients embrace the mission and philosophy
of CUPS believing that all people have an inherent right to
lead a life of dignity, equality and respect and to people
who are supporters of CUPS acting in ways which promote healing
and growth in people suffering the effects of marginalization
through homelessness and poverty.
Mr. Shuster has maintained a longstanding
and passionate support of CUPS, personally and professionally.
Some of his many involvements with CUPS have included:
• On a monthly basis, he and his colleagues
from BMO arrive at CUPS with freshly made sandwiches, fruit
and sweets which they distribute to people accessing services
and programs at CUPS. Even after Mr. Shuster’s retirement
from BMO, his colleagues have carried on this tradition –
bringing warmth and welcome to people at CUPS.
• Mr. Shuster has been an annual supporter, attendee
and volunteer at the Calgary Street Talk Vendor Christmas
Party. Annually, Harley and his colleagues have helped bring
the spirit of Christmas to the people who make their living
selling Calgary’s street paper.
• Also at Christmas, Harley and members of his family
have participated in the CUPS Annual Christmas Dinner, an
event which provides a turkey dinner, entertainment, and gifts
to over 900 guests. Through his connection with Calgary Scouts,
Harley has encouraged the involvement of our younger community
members in this annual event.
• Mr. Shuster has also helped to facilitate a number
of important gifts to CUPS. The kitchen in the CUPS Family
Resource Centre has appliances made available to CUPS with
Harley’s assistance. This gift allows CUPS to ensure
that marginalized families receive hot, nutritious meals.
• On many occasions important clothing items such as
scarves, toques and mitts have arrived through Harley’s
efforts.
Harley’s support of CUPS have been
made up of two integral gifts. First has been the gift of
his time, effort and drive to make a difference in the world.
And second, by sharing his experiences and knowledge with
the people around him and by encouraging them to become active
citizens. Both approaches to supporting CUPS have made a tremendous
impact on CUPS.
Mr. Shuster is a truly deserving recipient
of the Giving Wings to the Dream Award. His actions and gifts
embrace the people at CUPS and have helped to create a community
that believes in investing in the hopes and dreams of Calgarians
who are struggling. CUPS is fortunate to have Harley as a
member of its team and has benefited greatly from his kindness
and generosity.
Mr. Shuster will receive the Giving Wings to the Dream Award
at the 15th Annual Apache Canada / Stampeders Kickoff Breakfast
in support of CUPS. The breakfast will take place on 23 May
2007 at the Hyatt Regency Calgary from 7:30 – 9:30AM.
Over the past 15 years, this breakfast event and the relationship
between Apache Canada, the Calgary Stampeders Football Club
and CUPS has raised more that $500,000 for CUPS and its programs.
